Hubert de Chair Toogood was born at Kensington on 23 July 1885 and was commissioned into the Royal Engineers as 2nd Lieutenant on 20 December 1905. Qualified as a German Interpreter in April 1906, he was advanced Captain in October 1914 and - having been married at Brompton Church in January - served in France from 31 August 1918. Employed by the Foreign Office from January 1920, he was advanced Major in January 1923 and retired in April 1930. He died in Ealing in 1970.
