William Scott was Chief Constable of South Shields Police for nearly three decades. He was present and presumed killed during the aftermath of the famous St Bedes Railway Disaster, when at 0720hrs on 17 December 1915 at St Bedes Junction near Jarrow, a Signalman's error sent three trains into a collision. 19 were killed and a further 81 injured, mainly due to the large fires which broke out at the scene. Scott was initially missing and presumed killed, but clearly came through as he took the O.B.E. in 1923; sold together with his calling card and details from a family source.
