George Bernard Clarke was born on 11 March 1913 and enlisted in the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (T.A.) in November 1936.
Called-up on the outbreak of hostilities, he was taken P.O.W. while serving in the 2/4th Battalion near Cento in Italy on 9 October 1944. His unit's war diary for that date refers to three German attacks and much confused fighting and he was likely taken prisoner during a recce of Casale, which came under heavy fire.
Clarke was subsequently incarcerated in Stalag 344 at Lamsdorf and, from February 1945, in Stalag XIIIC at Hammelburg, where his working party duties included the 'clearance of debris'; his POW debrief, refers. Returning to his Yorkshire roots on repatriation, Clarke died in York in May 1986.
