Edward Gordon Fearon was born at Toronto, Canada in 1897 and upon the outbreak of the Great War was a steward living at Montrose Avenue, Toronto. He travelled to England and enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery at Liverpool on 12 August 1915. Having served in France from 14 December 1915, he was decorated for his work attached to the 9th Trench Mortar Battery. Discharged on 14 June 1919, Fearon was still awaiting passage home to Canada in August 1919 and had to appeal to the authorities to get home; sold together with his two pressed card identity tags.
