S. E. Berjawi was one of only 140 men from the Regiment to serve operationally in Sierre Leone as part of the British Short Term Training Team in 2000. The Royal Anglians were replaced by the Royal Irish Regiment and shortly afterwards 11 men from the Royal Irish were taken hostage by the 'West Side Boys' which resulted in the scaling up of operations in Sierre Leone.
