James Fraser Gordon was born at Inverness, Scotland around 1889, although later service papers suggest 1881, the son of Mary Gordon of 119 Main Street, Gorbles. Serving with the Militia Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry prior to the Boer War he joined the Volunteer Battalion at Glasgow in January 1900. Posted to the 1st Battalion, Highland Light Infantry in South Africa on 15 January he served with them for a year before being transferred to the Scottish Horse on 5 April 1901.

Serving until October 1901 he was discharged at Cape Town. Joining the Transvaal Police on 17 November 1902 Gordon joined the South African Mounted Rifles from them for service in the Great War. On the pay roll with this unit from August and he entered the war in German South West Africa not long afterwards. Invalided from Swakop on 28 June 1915. Remaining in South Africa for the rest of the war he joined the South African Police in April 1920, being awarded his Permanent Forces L.S. & G.C. in February 1921. Transferred to the Department of Agriculture. in April 1921 Gordon apparently saw some service in Britain during the Second World War.
