Charles Cogdell was born at Paddington, London in 1871 and attested there on 15 September 1889, noting previous service with the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, East Surrey Regiment. Posted to India in January 1891 he was to serve there for over four years before returning in February 1895.
After a year of Home service Cogdell joined the Army Reserve in September 1896. Recalled for duty in the Anglo-Boer War he was to be one of just five men of the East Surreys to be entitled to the Belfast clasp. Leaving South Africa in August 1902 he was demobilised on 31 August.
