William Edwin Elston Stone was born at Devonport on 14 December 1849. Entering the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer on 21 January 1873, he was confirmed in that rank in April 1873 and promoted to Chief Engine Room Artificer in July 1877. Serving on Albacore, February 1884-June 1887, during which time she was stationed at Suakin and saw action while that city was briefly under effective siege by Osman Digna's Mahdist tribesmen. Notably on one occasion a group of Dervish warriors infiltrated the defences and attacked the defenders, Albacore opened fire with her gatling guns and sent the attackers running. Stone was awarded the Queen's medal and Khedive's star for service in Egypt and Sudan. Serving on Neptune, February 1890-February 1893, he was awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. in November 1891. Pensioned ashore in 1895, he died at Devonport on 5 May 1910; sold together with copied service papers.
