Provenance:
Spink December 1997.

William Howells served with the 8th Company, Commissariat and Transport Corps. Serving with an unattached detachment at El-Teb and later Tamaai, Howells would likely have been within the British squares when the Dervishes attacked. At Tamaai one of the two squares, under General Davis, was broken and the Dervish warriors broke through. They were able to reform thanks to supporting fire from the other square, under General Buller. Howells survived both actions and returned to Cairo in April 1884, being advanced Corporal there on 11 April the next year he returned to Britain in December 1885; sold together with copied medal rolls and handwritten research.
