Matthew Phenix was born at Shankill, County Armagh in May 1829. He enlisted in the 76th Regiment of Foot at Lurgan in January 1847. Serving for nearly a decade he was posted to the Crimea and North America (Canada). Phenix transferred to the Royal Scots in September 1847 and was promoted Corporal in July 1850. Reduced to Private in April 1852, he was promoted Corporal again in 1854 and thence Sergeant in 1855. Discharged unfit in 1856, the Medical Report states:
'...has been suffering from chronic pneumonia and an abscess of parasites on right side of chest for a period of 18 months, the result of exposure...a case of constitutional infirmity aggravated by service in the Crimea.'
A weaver by trade, Phenix intended to return to his native Lurgan.
