India General Service 1905-1908, 1 clasp, Punjab Frontier 1897-98 (5516 Pte. W. Pirie 1st Bn. Gord: Hrs.), suspension slightly slack, light contact wear, overall very fine
Willliam Pirie was born at St Nicholas, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire in 1877 and enlisted at Aberdeen on 30 November 1895. Posted to India on 14 October 1897 with the 1st Battalion, seeing action during the unrest of the Punjab Frontier in 1897-98. He did not however take part in the Tirah expedition where the Regiment famously stormed the Heights of Dargai, winning two V.C.s in the process.
Posted to South Africa on 24 September 1899 he was present for the Defence of Ladysmith and Belfast (Medal and clasps). Returning to India after the war he served there for nearly two more years before joining the Army Reserve in Britain on 8 December 1903. He was finally discharged on 28 November 1911; sold together with copied service papers.
