John Laffey was born in York in June 1858 and was a brickmaker by trade when he joined the 51st Regiment of Foot (King's Own Light Infantry) in June 1877. Having served with his unit in Afghanistan (Medal without clasp), his career was blighted with indiscretions, variously for not tending his kit correctly, drunkenness and breaking windows. In all, he served some 1 year 6 days in confinement during his career and was discharged with 'bad' conduct in December 1889; sold together with copied research.
