A John Marlow is noted as being pensioned from the 16th Lancers on 23 February 1847, the year after the First Anglo-Sikh War. He was born in County Down around 1810; sold together with a transcribed Chelsea Pensioners Discharge list.
The 16th Lancers saw heavy action in the Battle of Aliwal on 28 January 1846 first charging the Sikh cavalry on the left flank. As they returned the unit found Avatabile Regiment of Infantry formed to receive them, despite this the 16th charged and overcame them. They were in at the end of the action as well, clearing the village of Bhundri in a single sweep. The regiment suffered 144 casualties proportionally the heaviest of the British units deployed, the Sikh army lost 3,000 dead and 67 guns captured.
