(x) Bank Melli, Iran, Specimen 50 Rials, ND (1938) / AH1317, serial number B/000000 18,
this lot features a 1938 Bank Melli, Iran banknote with a striking front design in green and pink hues. The front prominently displays Farsi text, accompanied by a majestic depiction of Mount Damavand. This landmark holds great symbolism in Iranian culture and often appears on banknotes. Mount Damavand is thought to embody the spirit of resistance and determination, standing as a symbol of Iran's stability through the landmarks unchanging nature. Also exhibited on the front of this note is an image of the Faravahar. Prominently featured to the right is a portrait of Reza Shah, the founder of the Pahlavi dynasty. The back continues with Farsi text, whilst the coat of arms, with the crown, sun, lion, and sword is also displayed. Additionally, the back showcases the notable ruins of Darius's Palace in Persepolis. Darius the Great was the king of Persia in 522-486 BC and a ruler of the Achaemenid dynasty, thus this image serves as a symbol, highlighting Iran's ancient architectural grandeur and heritage. The watermark of the Imperial crown further enhances the design of this note. Signed by Abdollhossein Hajier and Reza Gholi Amir Khosravi, this note is also stamped in violet reading ANNULLIERT SCHWEIZ BANKVEREIN BASEL, adding a unique mark of its journey (potentially) through Swiss banking,
