Auction: 24038 - The Dr. Martin M Mortazavi Collection of Persian Banknotes
Lot: 53
(x) Banque Melli, Iran, Colour Trial Specimen "Brown" 100 Rials, ND (1935),
proposed to be issued between 1933 and 1935 and is notable for its beautiful colour schemes. The front of the note displays a portrait of Reza Shah in military uniform with a high cap, while the back is adorned with vignettes of a fortress and a coat of arms.
Unlike all the other denominations in the series, which were printed by the American Bank Note Company, the printing company responsible for this note remains unknown. This type was an experimental design, distinct from the others, especially with respect to the back design where, for example, it features the coat of arms with crown, sun, lion and sword framed in a square instead of being encircled. Additionally, it is the only denomination repeated in the series, which underscores its experimental nature. This is further emphasised by the fact that this note is only known in specimen, colour trial specimens or proof format,
(Pick 28At1, BNB 112), in PMG holder 58 EPQ Choice About Uncirculated, printer's annotation, only 3 notes in higher grade on PMG Census
