Auction: 24038 - The Dr. Martin M Mortazavi Collection of Persian Banknotes
Lot: 1

(x) Iran, German Military WWI, 25 Kran on 10 Mark, 6th October 1906 (ND 1916-17), serial number J2378044,
this 25 Kran on 10 Mark was issued by the Reichsschuldenverwaltung (Imperial Debt Office, RSV). During WWI, an Iranian government supported by Germany was established in the cities of Hamedan and Kermanshah. In response to a coin and banknote shortage, 5 German notes were overprinted with red Farsi. Although the exact date of introduction remains uncertain, it is believed to be of late 1916. The notes were circulated for a brief period before being withdrawn in March 1917.

Surviving examples are exceptionally rare. Following the end of WWI, the remaining notes were put into storage and the majority were subsequently destroyed by a fire. As a result, occasional burn marks on the notes can be seen.

Interestingly, this is the highest denomination of only two denominations issued by the Imperial Debt Office, RSV,

(Pick M2 Ovpt. in Germany #9, Rosenberg 487), in PMG holder 12 NET Fine, edge damage, tape repair, only 3 notes in higher grade on PMG Census
