The Famous 'Glasgow Error'
1964 50th Anniversary of the Battle of The Falklands, 6d 'Glasgow' error, a very lightly mounted mint example; superb and hugely rare. Offered with the normal 2½d. and 6d. for comparison. B.P.A. Certificate (1985). S.G. 216a, £40,000. Photo
Note: The error is believed to have occured on a single sheet of sixty stamps due to a mix-up during the two-stage printing process. A sheet, apparently already printed with the HMS Glasgow vignette had the 6d. frame applied in error.
The affected sheet was sent unnoticed to a dealer in New York who also failed to spot the error adn split it into single stamps to sell with the rest of the set to new issue customers. To date only around a third of the affected sheet has been accounted for making it one of the rarest Q.E. II errors.
