Auction: 24033 - The "KMC" Collection of Stamps and Covers of Mexico
Lot: 67
(x) Mexico
1856 Issue
Veracruz ½r. Blue, displaying good margins on well-preserved cover from Tlacotalpam to Veracruz, dated October 20, 1856, with a very good strike of the dispatch cancel. Scott 1.
Note: Dated on the same day as the legendary Tlacotalpam Provisional. Additional investigation and court documents reveal that the so-called Provisional was nothing more than a postal fraud committed by the postmaster to cover up money he misappropriated from the post office. The presence of this cover featuring a regular stamp demonstrates that there was no shortage of stamps in the town, confirming that the so-called Provisional was a deception. While the so-called Provisional was reportedly sold for $100,000, the cover in this lot sold for $2,800 at the 2000 Regency auction (lot #5524).
