1862 (13 Dec.) mourning envelope ex the Aaron correspondence from Marlborough to San Francisco via London, bearing 1860-61 rough perf 14-16 1d carmine-rose (3, faults at top due to being affixed at edge of cover) and 1/-violet (2, one bisected diagonally), each tied by rays "96", showing red manuscript "1/3", despatch, London Paid (23.3) and arrival (6.5) datestamps with Brisbane transit c.d.s. on reverse; the envelope with part of flap missing. A remarkable franking, not only the earliest recorded use from Queensland to the United States, but the only known 1/- bisect cover.
Note: This cover was carried from Sydney by P&O Bombay to Galle and Suez, P&O Pera, Alexandria to Southampton and closed mail via New York to San Francisco .
Great Britain received 1/3d. credit from Melbourne that included the ½d. overpayment due to the lack of ½d. stamps.
