1901 (29 Dec.) unstamped soldier's envelope to Cape Town, headed "Besieged no stamps available H.H.S." and showing Douglas c.d.s., countersigned “McGryer Capt. D.E.O.V.R” (Duke of Edinburgh’s Own Volunteer Rifles) at lower left, though taxed "T2d" and with handstruck "2d" for the 1d soldier’s concessionary rate and a 1d runner’s fee. The only recorded military cover to leave during the siege. Photo
