Siege of Mafeking: 13 October 1899 to 17 May 1900

1900 (26 Mar.) envelope (with original letter) to "Telegraph Department, Genl Post Office, Cape Town", bearing seriffed overprint British Bechuanaland 6d. on 3d. claret [4] tied by Mafeking c.d.s. with another strike alongside and showing, on reverse, Barkly West transit (11.4) and Cape Town arrival (15.4) datestamps. It was then postmarked "records branch" (17.4) opened in error and re-sealed with tape; the envelope much creased and with other faults. The earliest known civilian line crosser envelopes are postmarked 26 March 1900. Photo
