1900 (10 Feb.) small unstamped envelope from Major Francis William Panzera, commander of the artillery, to his wife in Essex, marked "Active Service no stamps available, no postal markings", carried by military courier out of the siege and forwarded under cover to England. The contents include "...only a very small letter can go to you...The only letters or cables which have reached Mafeking during the siege are those addressed to Biera and Bulawayo...Pray send me a cable "Panzera Mafeking via Bulawayo" - I fear there is not very much chance of our relief for some time but we are alright & can hold our own against any numbers they bring against us..."
