Lot: 133
(x) The Major David Cecil Underwood Jr. Collection
Royalty
1876 Oval enamel portrait of Prince Albert Edward, Prince of Wales by Mathieu Deroche, the famous French photographer and painter, housed in an ornate gilt frame, surmounted by the feathers of the Prince of Wales, with a decorative enamel border surrounding the portrait. The Prince is depicted wearing an officers uniform of either the Rifle Brigade or the King's Royal Rifle Corps, and is wearing the Badges of the Orders of the Garter and Bath.
On the reverse of the portrait is inscribed "Medalle D'argent / 1867 / Procede Deroche / 39 B'vd des Capucenes / Paris / 1875".
It is mere conjecture that the date relates to the Prince of Wales's visit to India of that year, or whether this was a presentation item by him at the highest level. A photograph of the Prince c1880 by Deroche is in the Royal Collection, Windsor Castle.
An item of immense rarity and beauty, housed in a fitted red leather standing case (frame 6x9 inches, fitted case 9x11.5 inches)
