Essay
1d. stamp-size composite essay with printed Head and hand-painted Crown, frame, name and duty, in blue and Chinese white on glazed card (92x60mm.), fine. Delightful. Photo

Note: In July an essay was submitted by Perkins Bacon& Co. to the Agents of the Colony, Edward Sheldon & Co.. The head of the Queen wering the gothic crown was after the Courbold head which was used for the circular 5/- stamps of New South Wales. The head was printed and the frames hand-drawn in black. Two designs, both for the 1d., and a third with the hed only. Th agents did not accept the estimate but obviously showed the design to De La Rue as these were the only stamps printed by this firm with the gothic crown.
