Covers and Cancellations
1862 (20 June) large part of an envelope (reduced at right) from Simon's Town addressed to Potsdam, Prussia bearing 1855-63 1d. pair with cut into to huge margins, underpaid and showing several taxing marks in crayon or ink with adjacent London (1.8) transit c.d.s. A closer look will reveal that probably some stamps were affixed at the upper left-hand corner but these come away or were removed before they could be defaced by the post office and the letter was thus treated as being insufficiently pre-paid. The reverse with despatch, Cape Town (20.6) and Augsburg (3.8) c.d.s. An interesting cover.
