Line Engraved Proofs and Essays
Perkins, Fairman and Heath "Patent Hardened Steel Plate" trial sheet showing twenty-eight different designs, printed on thick paper (380x380mm.) and mounted within frame (c.450x465mm.), with note from Nissen affixed to reverse of frame reading:
"The Perkins Bacon Sheet must be the earliest known example of printing connected with stamp design. A composite sheet, 15 inches square, engraved and printed between 1820-1822 ... the sheet shows dozens of very fine engine-turned patterns, used originally by the firm for printing banknotes, etc. Many of these were later used as backgrounds for stamps. It is probable that some had been brought over from Boston, U.S.A. by Jacob Perkins in 1819."
Some foxing though a superb item.
