Lot: 185

(x) Kuwait
1923-24 complete set of twenty-seven unissued with the obsolete spelling 'koweit' overprinted on each, comprising the ½a. to 10r. set of fourteen values and the 'service' overprint set of thirteen; fine and fresh mint, only a very few complete sets remain, this being one of the finest. B.P.A. Certificate (2014) for all values. S.G. see footnote below No. 15, £45,000

Note:
Produced in 1923, these essays were prepared prior to adopting the name 'Kuwait' for postal purposes and making it closer to the pronunciation in Arabic. Two panes of twelve of each value were overprinted in Calcutta.

The first pane was broken-up, a set of blocks of four now resides in the Royal Philatelic collection, two sets were sent to the then Viceroy and one set to the Deputy Director General. The second pane was obtained by a London stamp dealer, therefore no more than seventeen sets were available to private collectors. Many sets have been broken up and few complete sets remain.
