HEREFORDSHIRE, Hereford, Robert Biddulph, Milton's Penny, 1796, JUNE 3D 1796, bull breaking free of chains, rev. apple tree and plough in wreath, plain edge, 12h, 17.46g (D&H 1), hairline die flaw through the obverse, with largely mint-red surfaces and lustre, good extremely fine; another, as before, rev. longer plough handles, plain edge, 12h, 18.95g (D&H 2), touch of softness, yet with some lustre, near extremely fine; another, as before, obv. JUNE 3 1796, in exergue, plain edge, 12h, 20.05g (D&H 3), touch of softness and die flaw to reverse, very fine; another, as before, rev. longer plough handles, plain edge, 12h, 17.65g (D&H 4), some edge bruises to dark surfaces, some lustre, bolder very fine; C. Honiatt, Halfpenny, 1794, obliquely milled edge, 6h, 9.51g (D&H 5), some surface friction, otherwise mostly mint red surfaces, much as struck (5)

These tokens were issued to commemorate the victory of radical Whig parliamentary candidate, Robert Biddulph (1761-1814), in the Herefordshire election of June, 1796. Prior to his entry into politics Biddulph had resided in Bengal, India, were he traded bullock as a private merchant.
