This token is one of many produced by the coal trade in the West Cumberland region, an area with a long history of mining. Coal mining in Hensingham was first recorded in 1688 and continued well into the 20th century. During which time the area is also noted for its production of linen thread and check as well as other fabric and printing manufacture. This token, along with others struck for neighbouring pits harks back to the days when coal was carried to the ships by packhorse. The tokens were used to account for the movement of coal from the pits to the ships, the use of these metal tokens therefore avoiding the need for the exchange of money during the process.
