Provenance

The Alfred Leonard Fuller of Bath Collection (1870-1941)

Acquired from Messrs Spink & Son, 4 November 1898 - £0.2.6

Spink Numismatic Circular, January 1899 (P.3181, no. 51166) - "1836. Finely toned, scarce. F.D.C" - £0.2.6

The discrepancy between the date of purchase and the date of physical listing is a fascinating discovery for the Spink annals - confirming that 'pre-list' deals were available to Spink's most favoured clients - Fuller now elevated to such esteem on account of his seismic purchase of Crowns in February 1898. In this particular instance, the staggered stock listing of Shillings began in August 1898 (P.2948-49, nos. 47705-47752 [Henry VIII-Edward VI]; through September 1898 (P.2983-84, nos. 48042-48104 [Philip & Mary-James I]; to October 1898 (P.3034-36, nos. 48934-49018 [Charles I]); to November 1898 (P.3086-88, nos. 49820-49918 [Charles I-William & Mary]; to December 1898 (P.3124-25, nos. 50159-50284); and finally January 1899 (P.3181-82, nos. 51135-51208 [George III-Victoria]). Evidently Fuller, now engratiated with the likes of Sam Marshall Spink and William John Webster was given an 'early preview' of the coins forthcoming, and as a result elected to purchase this particular specimen effectively two months 'pre-list'! As already noted, Fuller would return to these Shillings to further acquire both the Northumberland Shilling and several examples of Pingo's 1787 Shilling varieties when this section was officially published post-Christmas.
