Charles II (1660-1685), Royal African Company, 'Elephant' Shilling, 1666, no stop before DEI, CAROLVS II • - DEI • GRATIA, first laureate and draped bust variety right, elephant below, rev. four crowned shields cruciform, five strings to harp, edge straight milled, 5.94g, 6h (Woodhouse 321; Lord Hamilton 77; Manville 51; Pywell-Phillips 55; ESC 1026; cf. Bull 507 but with stop after HIB; S.3373), lightly rubbed, otherwise pleasantly cabinet toned, very fine, a celebrated rarity of the Shilling series
