Charles II (1660-1685), Royal African Company, 'Elephant and Castle' Halfcrown, 1681 TRICESIMO TERTIO, fourth laureate and draped bust right, elephant and castle below, rev. four crowned shields cruciform, six strings to harp, +DECVS•ET•TVTAMEN•ANNO• • •REGNI•TRICESIMO•TE[---]•O+• upwards on edge, the TERTIO blundered for want of space, 15.04g, 6h (R A Hoblyn, Numismatic Chronicle [Vol. XVII, 22 March 1877], p. 350, no. 6 this coin; Hawkins [1877 Sale], lot 23[d] ESC 488 [R4]; Bull 492 [R4]; S.3370), evenly circulated otherwise uniformly cabinet toned with darker tones below truncation, and colourful accentuations to peripheries, a really pleasingly bold fine / near very fine, OF THE HIGHEST RARITY, this being the very specimen studied by Richard Hoblyn for his 1877 Numismatic Chronicle article on the pyx-marked silver specie of England
