Charles I (1625-1649), Group I, Type 1a³, Crown, 7 July 1625 - 26 June 1626, Tower (under King), (m.m.) : • CAROLVS : D : G : MAG : BRIT : FRA : ET : HIB :REX : (m.m.), first Equestrian Portrait of King trotting left, brandishing sword with regular hilt breaking inner circle, Ostrich Plume on head dress and atop crupper, with ornately floral-decorated caparison, no ground line, rev. CHRIS | TO • AVS | PICE • R | EGNO (m.m.), square-topped and garnished shield over cross fourchée, simple bird-headed harp, 30.288g, 5h, m.m. lys ['sandwiched' in reverse legend] (Snelling LX, 7 same obverse die; Hawkins 472, Type 1a; Francis 1, same obverse die, the reverse die undocumented; Lingford 74 same dies; Lockett 2250 same dies; FRC I/II, no. 2; North 2190; S.2753), lightly and colourfully cabinet toned, with residual lustre in recesses, attractively problem-free, very fine or near so for issue, truly scarce in this wholesome state, and evidently an exceptionally rare die pairing unrepresented in the collections of the British Museum, Royal Mint Museum, Ashmolean, Fitzwilliam and Hunterian Museum
