James I (1603-1625), Third Coinage, Pennies, Tower (5), 4 July 1623 - 17 June 1624. I : D : G : ROSA SINE SPINA, no inner circle, large rose, rev. • TVEATVR • VNITA • DEVS, beaded inner circles, large thistle, 0.516g, 3h, i.m. lys [on obverse] (Hawkins -; North 2128; S.2672A), richly cabinet toned and lustrous with attractive blue huing to reverse, a pleasing good very fine; another, m.m. two pellets, as last, except, no inner circles on reverse only, 0.592g, 4h, i.m. two pellets (Hawkins -; North 2128; S.2672A), slightly broad struck with the D of DEVS re-entered, with underlying lustre and richer cabinet tone, a bolder very fine, scarce; another, 4 July 1623 - 17 June 1624, as first but no inner circles either side, 0.407g, 12h, m.m. lys [both sides] (North 2128; S.2672A), clashed dies with areas of striking weakness, otherwise residually lustrous and richly cabinet toned, a bolder fine to almost very fine; another, 4 July 1623 - 17 June 1624, as first, 0.475g, 3h, i.m. lys (Hawkins -; North 2128; S.2672A), square-cut flan with small striking fissures, otherwise attractively cabinet toned, some peripheral weakness, otherwise practically as issued, a remarakble little survivor; lastly, 4 July 1623 - 17 June 1624, as third with no inner circle on reverse, 0.447g, 10h, m.m. lys [on reverse only] (North 2128; S.2672A), cabinet toned, almost extremely fine, a wonderful and varied group of Jacobean Penny varieties (5)
