James I (1603-1625), Third Coinage, Shilling, 9 June 1621 - 3 July 1623, Tower, (m.m.) • IACOBVS • D : G : MAG : BRI : FRA : ET • HIB : REX • sixth crowned and armoured bust right, XII behind, rev. (m.m.) QVÆ DEVS CONIVNXIT NEMO SEPARET, square-topped shield, bird-headed harp, 5.888g, 8h, m.m. thistle (Montagu III, 215 this coin; North 2124; S.2668), 17th Century personalised graffito 'RW' (Robert Williams perhaps?) before bust, with some peripheral striking softness, otherwise central devices attractively bold and uniform and further accentuated by gloriously fiery orange-blue cabinet tone, a really good very fine thus, and evidently the finest for type that the great numismatist Hyman Montagu could source in his decades of collecting and seemingly limitless funds
