Elizabeth I (1558-1603), Third and Fourth Issues, Threepences, Tower, smaller flan types, 14mm. (5), 1561, (m.m.) ELIZABETH : D .' G .' ANG .' FRA .' ET • HI .' REGINA, beaded inner circle, crowned and draped bust 3F left, large rose behind, rev. (m.m.) POSVI DEV .' AD-IVTORE-M : MEV .' beaded inner circle, square-topped shield over long cross fourchée, [15-6]1 above shield, 1.488g, 7h, m.m. pheon (BCW BA-3B/BA-b5; North 1998; S.2565), struck soft on shield, otherwise on a neat round flan with darker cabinet tone and pleasant portrait details, centres strictly fine, the peripheries bolder; another, 1565, similar, reading....AN .' FRA .' ET • HI .' REGINA, smaller rose, otherwise as before, 15-65 above shield, 1.453g, 8h, m.m. rose over pheon [on obverse only] (BCW RS-[-]/RS-b2 the obverse 232 legend entirely unrecorded for Mm, but cf. BA-6F]; North 1998; S.2565), darker cabinet tone, otherwise approaching very fine, a most curious variety, previously un-noted by Brown, Comber and Wilkinson, presumably rare thus; also, 1566, as last, 15-66 above shield, 1.457g, 7h, m.m. portcullis (BCW PT-1F/PT-a; North 1998; S.2565), beautifully cabinet toned with much underlying lustre, good fine, the pyx mark astonishingly crisp, delightful thus; another, 1566, similar, reading....ANG .' FR .' ET • HI .' REGINA, as third, 1.539g, 7h, m.m. lion over portcullis [both sides] (BCW LN-1G/LN-a; North 1998; S.2565), lightly clipped, rubbed and dented on portrait, otherwise the over-marking beautifully clear, strictly about fine courtesy of bolder peripheries and scarce; lastly, 1568, as before, 15-68 above shield, 0.943g, 12h, m.m. coronet (BCW CN-1G/CN-c; North 1998; S.2565), crimped and creased, with minor splits, toned, fair to fine; a fascinating group (5)
