Elizabeth I (1558-1603), First Issue, Groats, Spring - 8 November 1560, Tower, m.m. lys (2), (m.m.) ELIZABETH : D .' G .' ANG .' FRA ' Z HIB .' RE '. beaded and wire-line inner circles, crowned and draped bust 1F left, rev. (m.m.) POSVI DEV .' AD-IVTORE-M • MEV .' beaded and wire-line inner circles, square-topped shield over long cross fourchée, 2.026g, 6h (BCW LS-3D/LS-e1; North 1986; S.2551), drilled behind portrait, otherwise on a pleasingly full round flan, toned, a bolder fine; another, similar, reading...ANG .' FRA ' Z HIB .' RIGI '. [sic] as before, 1.910g, 12h (BCW LS-3B/LS-e2; North 1986; S.2551), pierced in legend and ragged above crown, otherwise crimped and richly cabinet toned, a pleasing very fine for strike; also, Second Issue, Groat, 1 January 1561 - 24 October 1561, Tower, similar, reading...ANG .' FRA ' ET • HIB .' REGINA, as before, 2.018g, 4h, m.m. cross-crosslet (BCW CC-1B/CC-b1; North 1986; S.2556), small dents and crimped with resultant flatness to portrait, otherwise residually lustrous and colourfully toned, good to fine at peripheries; lastly, 1 December 1560 - 24 October 1561, similar, reading...AN .' FR ' ET • HIB .' REGINA, as before, 4h, m.m. martlet (BCW MR-1E/MR-b4; North 1986; S.2556), clipped and creased, rubbed but residually lustrous but colourfully cabinet toned with hues of neon blue-green and red, scarcely fine / almost very fine (4)
