Henry I 'Beauclerc' (1100-1135), 'Star in Lozenge' Penny, c. 1121, London, Sperling, [+ h]ENRICV[S R], crowned and draped bust left, lys-tipped sceptre before, wearing bejewelled mantle, rev. + SP[ERLI]G [. O]N . LVND: the colon formed of a large lower and smaller upper stop, lys-tipped lozenge, six-pointed star at centre, voided trefoils in angle, 1.318g [20.340grns], 1h (Hawkins 265; W J Andrew, 'A Numismatic History of the Reign of Henry I: 1100-1135' [NumChron, 1901], p. 310 this coin listed; Murdoch 237 = Carlyon-Britton 1355 = Ryan 909 = Mack = Baldwin 57, 4 May 2004, lot 1055; SCBI 11 [Stockholm], 787; BM 1869,0719.1 same dies; BM 1973,0873.156 same obverse die [Lincoln Hoard]; North 869; BMC XIII, 95 same dies; S.1274), stress-marked, slightly crimped and the obverse off-struck from a square-cut and unfinished [?] die, with resultant peripheral "softness", otherwise with an imposing Henrician portrait, otherwise lightly toned, struck details very fine and very rare, with only four specimens known to Andrew in 1901 including two in institutions (British Museum and Hunterian); and truly poignant being struck in the aftermath of the 'White Ship' disaster whence heir apparent William Adelin drowned in the English Channel
