1871 "Penfold" Letter box by Walter Thornhill. A Victorian, brass mounted, oak "Country House" hexagonal letter box, having carved down-swept Acanthus leaf top, bordered by 48 turned spheres and with budding acorn filial, the front with hinged enamelled brass "Letters" flap within brass aperture, above door with applied brass posting notice and brass escutcheon, on hexagonal plinth, base with drawer, the handle engraved "W. Thornhill. 144 New Bond St." and stamped Victorian registration mark for 11 March 1871, the interior black leather lined, height 63.7cm., width 30.7cm., with key. Superb. The rarest and most desirable of all the letter box types
