The East India Company decided to issue their own coinage from their new territory of Bombay in 1672. However, they soon discovered that only base metal coins of European appearance were accepted in trade. Silver and gold coins were circulated from the Mughal mints. Therefore it was decided to strike some Rupees in the Indian style, and these appeared in the late 17th century in the names of James II and William & Mary. They are very rare, as it proved to be a short-lived enterprise that the Emperor Aurangzeb soon terminated.
