(x) NGC AU58 | William III, Solus (1694-1702), 'Fine-Work' Five-Guineas, 1701 DECIMO TERTIO, "Ornamental Sceptres" Type, second laureate head right, rev. crowned shields cruciform, ornamented sceptres in angles, + •+ DECVS • ET • TVTAMEN • ANNO • REGNI • DECIMO • TERTIO upwards on edge, 6h (MCE 172; Schneider II, 481; EGC 401; GH 62; Stratos -; King 139; S.3456), minor adjustment marks on cheek, otherwise an exemplary cabinet specimen of this surprisingly rare 'Ornamental Sceptres' variety, outstandingly cabinet toned with rich red-orange tone overlying natural mint surfaces, the devices sharply and uniformly struck up, a most pleasingly good extremely fine, in NGC 'QR' holder, highly conservatively graded NGC AU58 (Cert. #6767998-001)
The King corpus lists 256 examples for this date, with no itemised breakdown for the common 'plain' and rare 'ornamental' variety. Since, then there have been over 150 instances of this type appearing at global public auction, yet Holloway repeats the King catalogue count in his recent publication on the subject matter.
