The L'Abbaye Collection: Part Two | Charles II (1660-1685), Shilling, 1680, CAROLVS • II • - DEI • GRATIA, second laureate and draped bust right, no stop before DEI, the laurel ties obliterated, rev. no stop after HIB, crowned shields cruciform, six strings to harp, interlocking Cs in angles, edge obliquely milled, 6h (Woodhouse 345 same dies; Pywell-Phillips -; EMC 134; Bull 551 [R6]; ESC 1058 [R6]; S.3375), a small scuff to reverse rim at 11 o'clock, otherwise rubbed but uniform for strike, a bolder fine / near very fine, an excessively rare and 'true' date in series, believed only a handful of specimens extant and by far the finest to be offered at global public auction since a superior specimen graced our rooms in September 2008, an highly important opportunity for the stimulated Shilling-sequester thus!
