Charles I (1625-1649), Pattern Crown, c. 1628, by Nicholas Briot, Tower, (m.m.) CAROLVS • D: G • MAG • BRITANNIÆ • FRAN • ET • HIB • REX • FIDEI • DEFENSOR, bare-headed cuirassed and draped bust left, wearing falling lace collar, within beaded inner circle, rev. HAVD • VLLI • VETERVM • VIRTVTE • SECVNDVS • King on horseback to left, holding upright sword, ground under horse, and •B• under its raised off fore-foot, no inner circle, [Spink XRF: 91.47% Ag; 5.24% Cu; 27.729g [427.92grns], 6h, m.m. anemone [on obv. only] (cf. Snelling Pl. VI, no. 7 for reverse; Farquhar, PI. XIII, No. 1 same dies; Brooke, p. 235; Brooker 1248 = Selig 216 same dies; North 2670), deft bruising to rims, otherwise pleasantly cabinet toned, a bolder very fine to bordering on extremely fine in parts, EXCESSIVELY RARE, one of only five known specimens, this long-considered the finest known until the surfacing of the Wigan example in 1872; nevertheless with an OUTSTANDING unbroken pedigree through the Willis, Butters, Lothian, Nightingale, Braunstein, Bliss, Moon, Montagu, Addington, Brown and Marshall Cabinets

Spink handled three commission bidders for this lot, A E Bagnall for £15.0.0; RGL for £150.0.0 and the eventual winning bidder Nightingale, who left a stupendous commission bid of £350.0.0!~
