Lot: 258

Early Anglo Saxon (c. 600-670), Gold and Garnet Cloisonné Panel, trapezoidal form, set with thirteen remaining garnets, foil beneath, arranged in arrow and stepped shaped cells, a band of rectangles at the wider end, all fixed with gold sheet back plate, 2.61g, length: 21.3mm, width: 14.6mm, thickness: 3mm (PAS: NLM-1A8B56 [this object]; cf. PAS: SWYOR-73AF38 (2012T890) and YORYM214 (1998T63), for other arrow-shaped cells; cf. BM 1939,1010.10 and 1939,1010.2.a-l [Sutton Hoo, Mound 1]; BM 1859,0512.1 ['Wilton Cross']; BM .1145.'70; BM .1140.'70; BM .1139.'70), a small piece of the gold has chipped off since the find, but is presented alongside the rest of the panel, the majority of the dirt has also been removed, damage to the edges of the object allows for the construction to be reasonably witnessed, the back is somewhat bruised and scratched, despite the damage, this is an incredibly rare artefact whose purpose remains unclear, other examples include much of the cloisonné work from Sutton Hoo Mound 1, notably the purse lid, which included several unusually shaped cloisonné plaques, very fine and desirable
