Anglo-Saxon England, Kent, Eadbald (616-640), Gold Shilling (78% AV), 'Substantive Gold' Phase, struck AD 620-635, London, Tirubassoenus [?], AVDVA[RLD RE]GES, the S inverted, diademed and draped bust right, 6/2 pellets on mantle, cross-on-globe before, rev. + TIRVVBAZZOEHVS commencing at 6 o'clock, B inverted and retrograde, the S retrograde, crucifix on globe within beaded circle, 1.286g, 7h (cf. Sutherland 77–78 var. same obverse die; A&W Type VI.T.i.; SCBI 63 [British Museum], 10 same dies; GCASE, p. 64, no. 430 same dies; EMC 2023.0499 this coin; North 29; S.758), a large scuff on King's cheek with concavity and resultant stress marks in reverse field, otherwise sharply centred on a beautifully rich buttery yellow gold planchet, struck details extremely fine for type, of the HIGHEST RARITY and SIGNIFICANCE to British numismatics as the first coin to name an English King marking his conversion to Christianity and found at the seat of St Augustine's Papal mission to England in AD 597
