NGC Ch AU | Ionia, Magnesia ad Maeandrum, AR Tetradrachm, reduced Attic standard, Herognetos, son of Zopyrion, magistrate, struck c. 140-150 BC, diademed bust of Artemis right, with bow and quiver at her shoulder, wearing stephane rev. MAGNITON/IROGNITOS/ZOPYRIONOS, Apollo standing left on maeander pattern, holding filleted laurel branch with his right hand and leaning his left elbow on a tall tripod behind him, all within laurel wreath, 16.85g (M. Jones, "The Autonomous Wreathed Tetradrachms of Magnesia on Maeander," MN 24 (1979) obverse die 27/a; SNG von Aulock 7921; SNG Lockett 2829 = Pozzi 2463, these dies), perfectly-centred, a wonderful example of Hellenistic style, with light cabinet toning and exquisite details to reverse, a beautiful coin, but for a minor scratch to obverse, good extremely fine, in an NGC 'Ancients' holder, graded Choice About Uncirculated (Strike: 4/5, Surface: 4/5) [NGC Cert. #8221846-012]
