Roman Empire, Magnus Maximus (AD 383-388), AV Solidus, D N MAG MAXIMVS P F AVG, rosette-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right, rev. RESTITVTOR REPVBLICAE, emperor standing facing, head right, holding labarum with christogram and Victory on globe, star in left field, SMTR in exergue, 4.48g (Depeyrot 50/1; RIC IX 76), some excavation marks and a wavy flan, split to twelve o'clock, however details well-preserved all the same, a bold very fine example with a particularly pleasing reverse
