(g) Germany, Saxony, Johann Georg I (1615-1656), Sophiendukat, 1616, later 18th century restrike, WOLDEM DER FREUD ANSEIN IN KIND : ERLEBT., crowned SC cypher, with swords in saltire, rev. HILF DV HEILIGE DREYFALTIGKEIT 1616, Eye of God in rays above IHS monogram; dove with spread wings below, 3.46g [53.4grns], 12h (Friedberg 2642; KM 126), light hairlining in the fields, yet with a rich red tone and near brilliance to the fields, good extremely fine, with NGC certification (Cert. #6767980-002)

Known affectionately as the Sophiendukat after the electress Sophie of Saxony, this denomination was first struck in 1616 to mark the occasion of Christmas. Over the years the coin became a popular gift from godparents to their godchildren which inturn gained it the name the Kinderdukat (Children ducat). As a result of this popularity the Dresden Mint continued striking with the date 1616 until 1872.
