A rare Antarctic-worn cloth Badge of the New Zealand Antarctic Research Programme
New Zealand Antarctic Research Programme cloth Badge, the details 'NZARP' above the Kiwi, cream cotton on black cloth, within a cream border, traces of previous wearing, very fine
The New Zealand Antarctic Research Programme (NZARP) was a research programme that operated a permanent research facility in Antarctica from 1959-96. Ground was broken at Scott Base on 10 January 1957 and this Badge likely dates from that early period, to be worn on all official clothing. A similar example can be seen upon a balaklava in the collection of the Canterbury Museum via collection.canterburymuseum.com/objects/474661/balaclava-nzarp.
Another can be seen on the arm of the jacket of Winter Base Engineer Jim Rankin via adam.antarcticanz.govt.nz/nodes/view/36972.
