(x) Army L.S. & G.C., V.R. (281 Cpl of Horse A. Firby. 1st Life Gds), suspension somewhat slack, good very fine
Anthony Firby was born at Marsham, Yorkshire in October 1842 and enlisted in 1863 with the 1st Life Guards. Advanced Corporal on 1 October 1878, he was further promoted Corporal of Horse on 16 February 1880. He continued to serve until 30 December 1884 then he was discharged having been awarded only the L.S. & G.C.
Three years later Firby married Mary Anne Duke and found work at the Greenwich Union Workhouse which he appears to have been at for the rest of his life. A newspaper article in The Brookley News on 28 December 1894 has him accused by an inmate of the Workhouse of assault. However another inmate attested: 'the complainant was the worse for drink and Firby told him to go away until he was sober.'
He died in Greenwich in September 1915; sold together with copied census data, service papers and a copied newspaper extracts.
